When a 1.618 extension is just open air
Extension ratios need nearby structure. Here is how we demote lonely 1.618 projections during Extension Mapping Sessions.
Traders love the 1.618 line because it looks decisive on a clean chart. In mapping sessions we often ask them to leave it drawn — then label it “watch only” when nothing else lives nearby.
Confluence checks we actually use
- Prior swing highs or lows within a small distance of the extension
- Obvious shelves visible on a higher timeframe
- Round numbers that already attracted volume in the same instrument
- A measured move that mirrors a prior impulse length near the same zone
If none apply, the extension is still mathematically correct and still practically weak.
A milder thesis beats a heroic target
Prefer a 1.0 or 1.272 that kisses structure over a distant 1.618 that only flatters the fibonacci drawing. Write the thesis in one sentence: what would make the level matter, and what would void it before price arrives.
Practice Lab habit
On Lab nights we cross out extensions that fail the confluence test before the debrief begins. The room learns faster when lonely lines are treated as optional, not obligatory.
